In the 50cc (4-6) class, the stakes were extraordinarily high for Robert Russell. Riding a borrowed Polini in the race, Russell was informed that, if he won both motos, the bike would be his to keep. Russell easily won the opening moto and confidently predicted a win in moto two. At the start of moto two, Russell got away midpack, but before the first lap was complete, he surged to the front to claim the moto win, the overall – and the bike!
